National Toxic Substance Incidents Program (NTSIP)

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, ATSDR, has a program that collects information from many resources and combines it in a central location to protect people from harm caused by spills and leaks of toxic substances. Information from the National Toxic Substance Incidents Program, NTSIP, can be used to prevent or plan for responses to toxic spills and leaks. NTSIP has three key features: the national database, state surveillance, and response teams.

The national database gives a clearer picture of why and where incidents are occurring, allowing officials to plan for or prevent them. The information is available to federal agencies, state and local health officials, emergency responders, researchers, and others. Seven states contribute data to NTSIP – Louisiana, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Utah. The state health departments collect information about spills and map the locations of where toxic substances are made, stored, used, and shipped. This information helps identify high priority problem areas so states can target and evaluate prevention efforts.
