A MINUTE OF HEALTH WITH CDC
Step Away from the Cigarette
Great American Smokeout — November 19, 2009
Recorded: November 10, 2009; posted: November 12, 2009

This program is presented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC — safer, healthier people.

For the thirty fourth straight year, the American Cancer Society will sponsor the 2009 Great American Smokeout on November 19. On this day, smokers throughout the United States are encouraged to quit for at least a day or more.

Although smoking in the U.S. has steadily declined over the past 40 years, the decline has stalled. More than 46 million adults still smoke, and each day, nearly 1,000 young people become new smokers. Smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease and death. Quitting smoking is the single best way for smokers to protect their health and the health of their family and friends.
